Functional Dry Needling

Dry Needling is a technique that uses a thin filiament dry needle, to treat pain, neuromuscular conditions and movement impairments with no medication or injections.

How does Dry Needling work?

Dry Needling leads to the following physiological effects:

  • Increased blood flow

  • Decreased banding of muscle tissue

  • Decreased spontaneous electrical activity (associated with lower pain thresholds)

  • Biochemical changes

  • Central nervous system changes

These physiological changes then lead to changes of increased range of motion, decreased pain, and restored function.

Who would benefit?

Anyone with pain, decreased range of motion, or decreased function can benefit from dry needling.

  • Commonly treated conditions include:

  • Back and neck pain,

  • Shoulder and arm pain Headaches,

  • Hamstring strains,

  • Hip and leg pain (including sciatic pain)

  • Knee pain,

  • Calf tightness or cramps

Is Dry Needling the same as Acupuncture?

Acupuncture and Dry Needling use the same tool, a monofiliament dry needle.

Dry Needling is based on Western Medicine and treatment of

myofascial trigger points based on anatomy.

Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine focusing on alternative points of insertion.

Do I need a referral?

A complete evaluation will be required prior to your initial Dry Needling session.

Physical Therapy treatment, in addition to Dry Needling, is recommended.

Medicare does require a physician's referral, however, most private insurance companies do not because physical therapists are approved for direct access care in Iowa.

Does insurance cover this?

Although progress is being made, not all insurance policies cover dry needling. Check with your policy or talk with our staff regarding our fee for service.
